I
OVERVIEW
-Science Olympiad teams consist of 15 team members and 3 alternates.
-Members of the team train for 3-4 events, 2 members/event. There is a total of 23 events.
-The team meets to practice two times a week, with extra work to do at home. A subset of events practice at each meeting.
-Alternates often learn a little bit of everything and can step in if someone can't make a competition
EVENTS
The Build Events
The build events are events in which the partner Olympians construct a device, following very specific rules, that performs a certain function.
-Building takes place before the event and what is built is tested at the event.
-Practice for these events (building) are done mostly at home, although testing is usually performed at practices.
The Hands-On Events
-hands-on events contain a substantial practical exam, where the two team members are expected to perform various tasks and answer questions dependent upon their results.
-practice includes perfecting techniques needed in the practical portion, as well as acquiring an understanding of the topic concepts.
The Knowledge-Based Events
-Knowledge-based events are most like traditional test-taking.
-There may be stations, but at those stations you answer questions on what you know about the item or picture that is at that station.
-There may also be questions in which you are asked to demonstrate your knowledge by constructing charts or diagrams, or by doing calculations.
-Preparation for these events involves a lot of studying!
